OVERVIEW

BioInnovation Institute (BII) is an independent research foundation based in Copenhagen, Denmark, operating within the Novo Nordisk ecosystem. BII supports world-class research and innovation in life sciences by bridging the gap between academic research and commercial application. The foundation works with biotech start-ups, researchers, and industry partners to accelerate the development of groundbreaking therapies and technologies.

BII Orbit is the community platform built for this ecosystem. It serves as a central hub for the entire BII community, connecting the internal BII team, 150+ life science start-ups, and over 1,000 individual users. Members use Orbit to discover events, explore the community, connect with advisors and collaborators, access resources, and find facility information. Everything the community needs lives in one place.

CHALLENGES

How do you bring an entire life science ecosystem, start-ups, investors, advisors, collaborators, and internal teams, into one platform, while connecting it to every tool the organization already relies on?

BII had an outdated community platform that couldn't keep up with the organization's growth. Critical processes like tracking startup progress and investment readiness were managed through Excel and Word documents. The team relied on multiple disconnected tools that didn't talk to each other, data was manually transferred between platforms, leading to duplication, errors, and wasted time. The community needed one platform that could replace the outdated tool and connect everything together.

SOLUTIONS

We rebuilt the platform from the ground up, designing it to be the central system where everything connects. Orbit covers every aspect of the BII community:

  • Members can discover and RSVP to in-person, online, and hybrid events, all managed within the platform.

  • Company profiles and user profiles allow members to explore and connect with each other across the ecosystem.

  • A dedicated section for advisors and collaborators, making it easy to find the right expertise.

  • A library of videos, links, documents, and books available to the community.

  • Information about available facilities within the BII ecosystem.

  • Start-ups can fill in investment readiness forms directly within the platform, while BII team members and anchors can review progress, set targets, and monitor development over time, replacing what was previously scattered across Excel and Word files.

  • Track funding rounds, sources, and financial progress for each startup within the platform.

  • Structured reporting replacing manual spreadsheets, giving the BII team real-time insight into company performance.

  • Synchronized all company and user data into Orbit.

  • Integrated for scheduling and inviting investors.

  • Connected to the reception system for visitor registration.

  • Linked events in Orbit to the Microsoft workspace for calendar invitations.

  • Integrated for managing meeting spaces and facilities.

RESULTS

The platform continues to grow. We actively maintain and develop new features as the BII community expands, ensuring Orbit evolves alongside the organization's needs.
